Is there a difference between a Barn Dance and a Ceilidh ?
Nowadays there is no significant difference between the Gaelic term “Ceilidh” which originally referred exclusively to Scottish tunes and dances and its English equivalent “The Barn Dance.”

How long is a Barn Dance/Ceilidh?
Most Barn Dances last between two and four hours with breaks.

The Maerlock are a young, cutting-edge professional group, based in the North West of England, who play concerts and ceilidhs. Their collection of tunes and dances comes from all over the British Isles and other global folk music hot-spots.

The band features a dynamic front line of fiddle and flute, supported by a driving rhythm section of guitar and piano and an energetic caller. The members share a wealth of musical experience, spanning style and genre, including jazz/funk, rock and classical. This makes for imaginative arrangements of traditional tunes, as well as adventurous original material.

The Maerlock were finalists in the 2004 New Roots Competition and regularly perform at weddings, parties, festivals and functions. They were instrumental in establishing Manchester’s only regular ceilidh night, the highly acclaimed Manchester Ceilidh.

Ceilidhs are especially popular at weddings because they are a fun way of getting your guests up on their feet and an excellent means of mixing the bride and groom’s family and friends. A ceilidh is flexible and can easily fit in around all other plans for a wedding reception.

Are the dances difficult?
Not at all. Our caller is there to explain the dances at the pace of the group of dancers. For details of specific dances please
